Pezeshkian: Iran and Afghanistan will address Helmand Water Rights
Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of Iran, announced discussions about pursuing the issue of water rights between Kabul and Tehran, emphasizing the prosperity of both nations.
Iranian media reported on Friday, January 10, that the Iranian President made these remarks during his visit to the Sistan and Baluchestan province.
He stressed, “Afghans are our brothers; a Muslim is a brother to another Muslim, not an enemy. When the Prophet of Islam conquered Mecca, all the leaders of disbelief surrendered, and the Prophet declared that all Muslims are brothers. He did not distinguish between new and old believers. If we are Muslims and accept the Prophet’s words and God’s book, then we are all brothers.”
According to the Iranian President: “We should help each other so that both Afghanistan and Iran prosper. Everyone should benefit, and everyone should win. If we change our perspective, all Muslims will achieve dignity.”
Pezeshkian referred to the neighboring countries of the Islamic Republic as “brothers” and added, “We will do everything within our government’s capacity to improve this process.”
He also mentioned discussions between Iranian officials and the Taliban government regarding water rights.
The tension over the Helmand River water rights has been a longstanding issue of contention between the governments of Afghanistan and Iran, and the matter remains unresolved.
Meanwhile, Abbas Aliabadi, Iran’s Energy Minister, stated during his visit to Sistan and Baluchestan that Tehran is “seriously” pursuing Helmand water rights through dialogue with the Taliban officials.
Recently, Abdul Kabir, the former Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs of Taliban, in a meeting with Alireza Bigdeli, the acting Iranian ambassador in Kabul, mentioned that the water rights issue had been resolved through mutual understanding.
According to him, “Irresponsible statements on this matter could negatively affect relations between the two countries.”
The resolution of water rights disputes is crucial for fostering trust and cooperation between Afghanistan and Iran. By prioritizing dialogue and mutual understanding, both nations can ensure the sustainable management of shared water resources while promoting regional stability.
Strengthening bilateral relations through cooperative efforts on critical issues such as water rights can pave the way for broader partnerships in economic development and cultural exchange, ultimately benefiting the people of both countries.
