Sports Briefs: San Domenico, Early still perfect in 2025
Gavin Early posted his second double-double of the week to lead San Domenico past Stuart Hall, 71-50, in Friday’s Bay Counties West matchup. Early was 12-for-18 from the floor for 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Kris Jakstas added 14 points and Ika Jokhadze had 7 points and 7 assists for the Panthers (2-0 BCL, 12-4).
San Domenico locked up the game before halftime with a 21-4 run in the second quarter for a 22-point lead at the break. Stuart Hall (9-9) never got closer than 14 points in the second half.
The Panthers, undefeated in January so far, are riding a four game streak ahead of a stiff road test against University (10-5) on Tuesday.
- The lead bounced back and forth for three quarters until Marin Catholic finally scratched out a fourth-quarter lead and held to beat host Archie Williams, 56-45, in Friday’s MCAL opener. Chase Merrick gave the Wildcats the lead at the free throw line at the end of the third quarter, and Marin Catholic held the Peregrine Falcons to just five points in the final quarter to seal the win.
- San Marin held off Tam, 65-57, Friday to win its MCAL opener for the first time in the past eight years, according to records. Grant Means scored a team-high 16 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Miller Morgan had 13 points, nine rebounds and two assists for the Mustangs (1-0 MCAL, 9-5) and JD Rhodes added 13 points, nine assists and four rebounds. Rio Seiler chipped in with 11 points, two assists and three rebounds. Porthos Oliveira led the Red-tailed Hawks with 24 points.
- Sophomore Evan Brewster scored a game-high 24 points to lead Terra Linda past Novato, 62-53, in Friday’s MCAL opener. The Trojans (1-0 MCAL, 11-3) jumped out to an early lead, but Novato (0-1 MCAL, 5-8) clawed its way back into the game. Novato’s Dom Scafani posted a team-best 22 points, eight rebounds and two steals, while Chris Toussaint added 14 points and seven rebounds. Brian Yates had 11 points and six assists for the Hornets.
- St. Vincent de Paul surged ahead in the second half for a 63-54 victory over Healdsburg on Friday. Jack Ellis led the Mustangs (10-4) with 18 points and Dylan Chelew followed with 17 points. Jacob Peralta added eight points.
Girls basketball
Carly Amborn shot out the lights with a 32-point effort as San Domenico rolled to a 63-21 road victory over BCL West foe Convent (3-6) on Friday. Amborn scored 29 points in the first half as the Panthers led 45-12 at the break. The Stanford commit sat for most of the rest of the game. Sanne Kostecki hit three 3-pointers and finished 11 points. Amahji Cook had eight points. The Panthers (7-9) are scheduled to face University (6-6) on Tuesday.
- San Marin’s Abigail Bartholo hit five 3-pointers en route to a team-high 19 points as the Mustangs (13-3) held off Tam, 51-46, in Friday’s MCAL debut. Tam’s Tula Peltz scored a game-high 22 points, with three rebounds, four steals and an assist. Alessia Ducati pumped in 10 points and 10 rebounds, with four steals for the Red-tailed Hawks (6-9).
- Marin Catholic’s defense held Archie Williams to single-digit scoring in each quarter of Friday’s 50-16 Wildcats victory.
Girls soccer
Jaela Brown scored the opening goal and Arlin Guzman converted a penalty kick to add a cushion in San Rafael’s 2-0 victory over Concord on Thursday night.
Boys soccer
Marco Caruso netted both goals in Tam’s 2-0 victory over University on Wednesday. Nathan Wanger and Noah Peterson had the assists.
Men’s water polo
San Anselmo’s Dylan Woodhead scored in Team USA’s 19-17 victory over Japan to open the World Cup Division 1 tournament in Bucharest, Romania, earlier this week. The Americans are 2-1 in the tournament after a 10-7 victory over host Romania and 15-7 loss to Montenegro. Team USA is scheduled to play rival Croatia on Saturday.
