'The Way Home' Season 3, Ep. 2 Recap: Jacob Comes Clean & Delilah Meets Colton for the Very First Time
After an explosive season premiere last week, The Way Home season 3 kept the bombshells coming in episode 2. Plus, this episode officially kicked off a whole new timeframe for the show: 1974!
In fact, that’s exactly where the new episode begins. After getting a mysterious voicemail from Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) before she gets pushed into the pond (episode one’s final scene), Kat (Chyler Leigh) jumps right after her.
But as Kat embarks on a journey to find her daughter, Alice is one again easily adapting to the new environment. After leaving the pond, she meets Rick and Vic Augustine, Elliot’s (Evan Williams) dad, and joins them to the town’s go-to spot, Coyle’s, to surprise Colton (Jordan Doww) with his brand-new guitar. There, she’s also introduced to a young and carefree Evelyn Goodwin (Devin Cecchetto).
Back to the present, Del (Andie MacDowell) is cozying up to Sam (Rob Stewart) in their secret hiding spot. As he asks Del to make their relationship public, he reveals he’s in love with her. Del, sadly, doesn’t exactly reciprocate. “Oh, Sam, that is so nice,” she says. “Can we just take it one day at a time for a little while longer?” Luckily, he seems to take it well.
In another key scene in this episode, we get a glimpse of how hard the transition has been for Jacob (Spencer Macpherson). “I’m sorry that I couldn’t come sooner,” he says over his 1814 parents’ Rebecca and Elijah’s tombstones. “I miss you and I’m so lost here without you. How do I find my footing when you were my foundation?”
“I’m dead in both eras,” he whispers as he uncovers his own grave closeby.
Continuing his struggle, Jacob opens up to Del. “Mom, I really miss my father,” he said, clarifying that he means Elijah, not Colton. “You hate the pond but I can’t it gave me a family that I love,” he explains.
“The pond took your childhood from me and gave it to someone else,” Del responds.
Then, in a surprise turn of events, Jacob comes clean about why he returned. “I feel guilty for missing that life when I have this one here with you but it’s a gift I’m not worthy of,” he said. “I wasn’t a good person in 1814, I stole. Yes, from people who deserved it, but I did bad things. Things I can’t take back. I put my family at risk. I should’ve been arrested, I very nearly was. The truth is I didn’t choose to come home to you. Mom, I had to.”
Of course, the news is heartbreaking do Del, who’s still getting used to having her son around after being missing for decades. “You were a good sweet boy who knew right from wrong and you loved us, fiercely,” she said. “But now I’m trying to protect someone that I don’t know.” Ouch!
In the next scene, we hop back to 1974 as Alice joins Colton, Rick and Evelyn at their summer kickoff party at the beach.
As it turns out, Evelyn and Colton weren’t just close friends at the time. “They’ve had their own language since childhood,” Rick tells Alice, who can’t help but be confused. “They may not see it yet but we all know they’ll end up together.” But what about Del?
Then, soon enough, a teenage Del (Julia Tomasone) shows up to the party. “I see my summer house guest has found me,” Evelyn says. “Everyone, this is Delilah Watson.”
From the looks of it, it was love at first sight for Colton. All night long, he just watches Del from a distance, chickening out from ever going over. “The longer I sit here, the longer I get to hope,” he tells Rick.
But, with some persistence, Colton makes her way over to her.
“Hi, beer?” he says. “You’re right, it is,” Del jokes back.
After a hostile back and forth, Colton gets the message and backs away. “Don’t say I never offered you anything,” he says. “I can’t, I don’t know your name,” she says. We see you making moves, Delilah!
As they continue their talk, tensions start to rise again.
“What, not a disco fan?” she says. “I’m a musician so no,” he replies. “There’s no substance to this disco stuff, you know? There’s no heart or soul, you’re not gonna cry your eyes out to it. it’s just fluff, it’s not music. I mean, unless you’re tone-deaf or something.”
“So you’re that guy?” she says. “That guy who hates something just because everyone else loves it. Well guess what Colton? I adore disco. And I’m a whole lot like it: I’m fun, I’m very popular so by that logic…,” she says, turning away. “Sorry I can’t here you, you know because of all the tone-deafness.” Looks like things weren’t sunshine and roses from day one!
Flashing forward to the present, Kat barely makes it to her book party, delivers an inspiring speech about Susanna’s story but gets interrupted by Evelyn’s son, Louis Goodwin. “While I may not have been raised here, Port Haven is close to my heart,” he says. “Which is why I’m gonna be opening Goodwin Vineyards later this year.”
“This is my family Ms. Landry, you’re rewriting our history,” he accuses.
Jacob then chimes in, sharing some of his experiences with Cyrus Goodwin. “What makes you such an expert?” Louis asks. “Because I lived it.”
As the room stands stunned and confused, Sam interrupts and diffuses the situation. Our knight and shining armor!
After the launch, he and Del have a heart-to-heart. As she agrees to make their relationship public, he responds saying that he’s leaving town for a bit. “It’s because I didn’t say ‘I love you’ isn’t it?” she says. “Because I do, I just get caught up in my head.” Talk about a major relationship milestone!
To finish off the episode, like always, The Way Home left us with some major shockers.
The first happened as the Landrys were reunited listening to Colton and Alice’s record together. “Maybe your trips back aren’t just to see Colton’s love story,” Kat speculates, to which Del adds, “It’s my love story too.” “Maybe it’s to see if he knew anything about time travel and the pond,” Kat says.
Then, in a surprise we never saw coming, Elliot reveals that his uncle Rick died after the summer kickoff party in 1974. “My dad walked away and Rick didn’t,” he says.
Alice then stands up and reveals that she was there. “Colton would’ve gone with him, but he walked me home instead,” Alice says, joining the pieces. “You saved dad’s life,” Kat adds.
Getting emotional, Alice turns around and runs back to the pond. Knowing how close Colton and Evelyn all were to Rick, she knows she needs to be there for them. But, as she climbs out of the pond in the 70s, she finds Colton making his way out too. Is he time traveling? Has he been all this time? When will we find out!
