New proposed law would protect child victims
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A bipartisan proposal from local lawmakers hopes to strengthen protections for child victims of crimes. The measures are also being supported by the Sena family, whose daughter was abducted in September 2023 from Moreau Lake State Park.
The proposed law will call for dedicated advocates to accompany children during all questioning and legal proceedings and make the child's identity private.
"The impact of a crime can last a long time to begin with, but it can last an even longer time when it has to be relived over and over," State Sen. Jim Tedisco said. "It's a bipartisan issue. It's not democrats, not republicans, it's the victims of crimes that are being perpetrated in New York State."
Legislation is also calling for New York State to create special state police units dedicated to solving cold cases.
