Police release video of fatal shooting of New Orleans attacker
The New Orleans Police Department released a body camera video of officers fatally shooting a man who earlier had driven a rented vehicle into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street, killing 14 and injuring dozens more.
The video, which was released Friday, shows the aftermath of Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar crashing a white Ford pickup truck and opening fire at the police officers in the vicinity.
Two officers can be seen standing in front of the open driver’s side door, with their guns drawn and pointed at Jabbar, according to the video.
One of the people at the scene can be heard shouting “put your hands up” right before gunshots are fired. Then, some law enforcement officers and bystanders can be seen running away from the white vehicle.
Three police officers — Sgt. Nigel Daggs and officers Christian Beyer and Jacobie Jordan — returned fire on New Year’s Day, shooting Jabbar. He was pronounced dead on the scene, according to New Orleans police.
The video is from the New Orleans Police Department officer Luis Robles's body camera. Robles did not fire at the attacker.
Authorities said previously that Jabbar, a U.S. citizen who lived in Texas, acted alone in the attack.
Lyonel Myrthil, FBI special agent in charge, said in an update Jan. 5 that Jabbar visited New Orleans at least two times, in late October and November, before the deadly attack.
Jabbar stayed at a rental home for a minimum of two days on Oct. 30, according to Myrthil. During the visit to the city, he wore Meta glasses to record video of the area where the attack eventually took place.
