Albany Water Department to conduct smoke testing
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Albany Department of Water & Water Supply will be conducting smoke testing in parts of the city on Tuesday. The testing comes as the department runs a study of the sewer system to identify breaks or defects.
Testing locations
- Livingston Ave. between Ontario St. and Judson St.
- Quail St. between 2nd Ave. and Livington Ave.
During the project, residents may see visible smoke emitting from vent stacks and manholes. In a notice, the Albany Water Department assured that this smoke is non-toxic for both people and animals. It is also odorless and poses no fire hazard. There may be residual smoke that surfaces in Tivoli Preserve as well.
To prevent smoke from entering homes, the department advised residents to pour water into drains they rarely use, like basement floor drains. If smoke does enter the property, it may indicate a plumbing issue and affected residents should contact a licensed plumber.
Inspection crews will be working outdoors and in easements on private properties. Testing is expected to take about two days per area.
The Albany Water Department reported to have notified residents in affected areas through public notices and signage. Residents are encouraged to contact the department if they have any questions, concerns or require additional information.
