Tottenham make big decision on signing a centre-mid in January
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made a big decision on which positions they will prioritise strengthening this month and which ones they will put off until the summer.
Tottenham expected to be one of the busiest clubs in January
January was always going to be a busy month for Spurs and they have started the window promisingly, securing talented young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague.
A new report from TEAMtalk has now backed up some of the rumours that have been doing the rounds over the last few days, revealing that signing a centre-back is one of the Lilywhites‘ main priorities this month.
It is explained that Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is Tottenham’s dream signing, but given that he would be extremely expensive, the club were also keeping tabs on Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Ko Itakura and Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov. Unfortunately, the latter is now close to a Man City move.
Spurs will not be reinforcing one area this month
Over the last few days, we have also heard plenty of speculation backing Spurs to make a move for midfielders such as Palmeiras’ Richard Rios and Inter Milan’s Davide Fratessi.
However, TEAMtalk now assert that contrary to these reports, Spurs are not looking to sign a new centre-midfielder this window.
The club reportedly feel that they have enough cover in that position and are thus prepared to wait until the summer before reassessing the situation.
The outlet asserts that Spurs are big fans of Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham, who is valued at around £20m, but the Black Cats are determined to hang on to the teenager until the end of the campaign.
Do Tottenham need an addition in midfield?
One can make the case that a central midfielder is arguably a bigger priority for Spurs than even a centre-back or a left-back.
When Rodrigo Bentancur served his length suspension, Tottenham’s weakness in that area was exposed, with Pape Sarr nor Yves Bissouma having some technical deficiencies in possession and being unable to consistently pick out the right passes.
However, Lucas Bergvall‘s impressive displays of late might have convinced Postecoglou to wait until the summer before making any bid decision in the midfield area.
