Leeds United interested in signing Tottenham defender in 2025
Leeds United are reportedly keen on a £10m-rated Tottenham defender, but questions are being raised about whether Spurs can afford to let him go given their current defensive crisis.
Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive woes
With a spate of injuries to key defenders, Tottenham Hotspur finds itself in a precarious position, as they navigate a campaign with lofty expectations both domestically and in Europe.
Indeed, Spurs’ centre-back roster has been decimated, with Cristian Romero sidelined due to a quadriceps injury and Micky van de Ven nursing a hamstring problem.
Adding to the misery, Ben Davies has also succumbed to a hamstring issue.
This string of setbacks has forced the Tottenham manager to turn to players like Archie Gray, who, despite his versatility, is playing out of position in central defence—a scenario that underscores just how stretched Tottenham are in this area.
The last thing Tottenham need right now is to further weaken their defensive ranks, especially given their ambitions under Postecoglou’s second season in charge.
Leeds United’s interest in Ben Davies
According to football journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking on Last Word on Spurs, Leeds United’s interest in Ben Davies is one to watch closely this January transfer window.
Despite Tottenham’s defensive struggles, the Welsh international could be on his way out of the club, with Leeds remaining eager to secure his signature.
Jacobs provided an insight into the situation, saying: “With Ben Davies, I think that he will also be gone. And the same for Fraser Forster as well.
“With Davies, the natural thing is to run down the contract. Leeds United remain interested. So that could be one to watch in the coming weeks. But I think that with Kinsky arriving, Forster falls down the pecking order.”
Is selling Ben Davies the right move for Tottenham?
From a purely financial perspective, cashing in on a player like Ben Davies, whose contract is nearing its conclusion, makes sense for Tottenham.
Offloading a £10m-rated defender would allow the club to reinvest in other areas, potentially strengthening the squad.
However, given the current state of their defence, letting Davies go without a solid replacement could be a gamble too far.
Even with Davies in the squad, Tottenham arguably need two additional defenders—one full-back and one centre-back—to shore up their backline.
It raises a critical question about the club’s priorities: balancing short-term squad depth against the long-term financial implications of losing a player on a free transfer.
