No One Asked For This: Mel Gibson Is Working On ‘Passion Of The Christ 2’
In 2004 Mel Gibson co-produced and directed the epic drama The Passion of the Christ, which portrayed the death of Jesus of Nazareth. Gibson’s work on the film was motivated by his religious beliefs — the actor belongs to a fringe Catholic sect that believes the current pope is a heretic. He runs his own church in Agoura Hills, California.
Despite his religious convictions, Gibson was arrested for drunk driving two years after the release of Passion. Infamously, during the arrest he went on an antisemitic tirade. Gibson may have been exposed to these beliefs as a child as his father is a documented Holocaust denier and a 9/11 truther.
Discussions of a sequel to Passion began in 2016. The film would focus on the story of the resurrection of Jesus. As of last year, production was scouting locations in Europe. Yesterday on Joe Rogan’s podcast, Gibson confirmed the project is moving forward and described it as “an acid trip.”
Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus of Nazareth in Passion, would reprise his role. Caviezel says the sequel would be titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection and that “It’s going to be the biggest film in world history.”
