We’re Hiring: Community Outreach & Coalitions Coordinator

If so, you could be a great candidate to be WABA’s new Community Outreach & Coalitions Coordinator. This is a full-time position concentrated on building and strengthening partnerships and relationships in Washington, DC, with a focus on Ward 7 and Ward 8.

Team

The WABA Advocacy Team is a six person team: Advocacy Director, Washington DC Organizer, Maryland Organizer, Montgomery County Organizer, Virginia Organizer, and the Community Outreach & Coalitions Coordinator. This role will report to the Washington, DC Organizer. WABA’s Advocacy Team focuses on building relationships with community members and decision-makers, hosting and coordinating campaigns, and advancing projects and policies.

Position Overview

The Community Outreach & Coalitions Coordinator will be a member of the Advocacy Team focused on engaging with and responding to community members’ inquiries and requests and on coordinating the Capital Trails Coalition. The community element of this role will be concentrated on building and strengthening partnerships and relationships in Washington, DC, with a focus on Ward 7 and Ward 8.

Job Responsibilities:

• (60% of job) Build relationships and engage community members in Ward 7 & 8.
  • Plan and host and partner on community events that encourage active living and multimodal transportation, such as walks, bike rides, yoga lessons, etc.
  • Help develop meeting agendas and facilitate community listening sessions.
  • Write, send, and compile results of at least 2 community surveys annually to reflect input and feedback from Ward 7 & 8 residents.
  • Identify and engage community organizations and leaders and officials with an interest in WABA’s agenda, and attend at least one community meeting in Wards 7 or 8 each month.
  • Recruit a cohort of engaged community members and volunteers in Wards 7 & 8 to support events and outreach efforts. 
• (30% of job) Coordinate the Capital Trails Coalition events calendar and share updates across the region.
  • Host focused, planned quarterly CTC Membership Meetings.
  • Host monthly CTC Steering Committee meetings, in collaboration with the CTC Co-Chair(s).
  • Prepare communications related to the CTC to share updates with the coalition and community members about updates across the trail network and about work from WABA’s DC, Maryland, and Virginia Organizers.
  • Highlight community engagement opportunities and encourage participation among community members and coalition members.
• (5% of job) Monitor the Advocacy inbox and handle the response to community requests.
• (5% of job) Support WABA activities such as staffing WABA events, stuffing envelopes, loading equipment, and tidying up.

   Core Skills:

• Knowledge of the history and current experience of community members in DC’s Wards 7 and 8.
• 2-3 years of relevant experience;
• Comfort with verbally communicating clearly and respectfully with a range of external stakeholders and internal teams;
• Comfort facilitating meetings and events with community members;
• Strong project management and organization skills;
• Community event planning and hosting experience;
• Self-motivated and able to work closely with others;
• Experience working in diverse communities and on diverse teams of staff and volunteers;
• Experience responding to incoming requests for support and informational 
• Ability to write clearly and persuasively and comfort with speaking to a group.

Useful Skills & Experience:    

• Lived experience and/or familiarity with DC’s Ward 7 and/or Ward 8;
• Grassroots organizing, policy, and/or planning experience;
• Knowledge of on-street bicycle infrastructure and policies; 
• Familiarity with responding to community inquiries and/or managing a help desk.
• Technological savvy, including use of Google suite and Salesforce.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time, salaried position (salary range: $50,000 – $62,000). Benefits include employer covered health/dental insurance, generous flex and comp time policy, vacation, sick and personal leave, committed colleagues, and a fun working environment.

The candidate must be located in the Washington, DC area or be willing to relocate — while WABA staff work a hybrid schedule, this position will require attending regular in-person events. Occasional evening and weekend work is required.
