Six Mets Among Best Prospects at Their Position
Baseball America named its top prospects at every position on Tuesday, and six Mets wound up on the list.
- Ryan Clifford, 1B (No. 8)
- Ronny Mauricio, 2B (No. 6)
- Jesus Baez, 3B (No. 6)
- Jett Williams, CF (No. 6)
- Brandon Sproat, RHSP (No. 9)
- Nolan McLean, RHSP (No. 23)
The names included aren’t much of a surprise, but Baez being mentioned as the No. 6 third base prospect is noteworthy. He had a strong 2024 season that was derailed by a torn meniscus, slashing .262/.335/.447 with 11 home runs across 72 games with High-A Brooklyn and Double-A Binghamton. While Baez split his time at shortstop and third base evenly with 19 games at each position to go with an additional nine at second base, his most likely long-term home will be third.
Baseball America listed Williams as the No. 6 centerfield prospect, and while he has played more shortstop than center in his career, most people expect him to ultimately wind up in the outfield or at second base.
Mauricio ranking No. 6 among second base farmhands shows that Baseball America still believes his combination of power and speed as a switch-hitter will play at the major league level. Clifford and his 60-grade power made the list on a fairly loaded list at first base as well.
On the pitching side, Sproat ranked No. 9 and saw his stock soar thanks to a season that saw him go from Brooklyn to Triple-A Syracuse while posting a 3.40 ERA with 131 strikeouts over 116 1/3 innings. McLean ranked No. 23, and he should be expected to keep rising following his commitment to focus on pitching instead of being a two-way player.
One of the more surprising omissions was outfielder Drew Gilbert, who has lost some of his luster due to an injury-plagued 2024 season and a subpar showing in the Arizona Fall League.
