The Guardians should add a proven right fielder to the roster in case Will Brennan still looks like Will Brennan in Spring Training and in case Chase DeLauter's glass foot continues to be made of glass. Ideally, it would be a left-handed hitter, but unfortunately, there don't appear to be many left-handed right fielders readily available. Maybe they like Jason Heyward or David Peralta. Maybe they trade for Jesus Sanchez or Lars Nootbaar. We will see.
But, I do know there is a right-handed hitter who has a career 115 wRC+ vs RHP who is available and who is playable in right field. I suspect this player will be looking to get a non-roster deal with an invite to Spring Training. I also remember that the Guardians had interest in trading for this player a few years ago. And, he's a respected clubhouse presence who has publicly advocated for the rights of marginalized people.
That's right, it's time to sign Mark Canha. Ok, Canha had a decline against fastballs last year (-3.6 runs below average) and only a 104 wRC+ overall, is 35 years old, and a right-handed hitter as I mentioned. But I have noticed that a lot of older hitters have bounceback seasons right after their first fastball decline year (Carlos Santana, Paul Goldschmidt, aforementioned Jason Heyward, just to get started. Canha also has a 10% walk rate for his career, paired with only a 20% K-rate and a solid .164 ISO. He is exactly the kind of player to push younger guys to go all out to make the roster and, if needed, provide a bridge for Chase DeLauter as needed.
He was also just with the Tigers and can provide us secret info on arranging their demise. So, hey, I know it's January 10th. But, Paul, Chris, Mike... canha have a Canha for Christmas?
