Mandy Moore Had the Most Unapologetic Response to Hate Comments After This Post About the LA Fires
Sadly, like many other celebrities this week, Mandy Moore had to evacuate her home in Los Angeles and came back only to find it partially destroyed by the flames.
“Miraculously, the main part of our house is still standing,” she wrote on Instagram alongside photos of her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, in the rubble. “For now. It’s not livable but mostly intact. We lost Taylor and Griffin’s studio with every instrument and piece of equipment they’ve ever owned. We lost our garage and back house.”
But while the loss was surely heartbreaking for Moore, she acknowledged how grateful she is. “Everyone we know lost everything,” she continued. “Every house on our street is gone. My in-laws. My brother and sister-in-law – 6 weeks from welcoming their first baby. Our best friends. Feeling weird survivor’s guilt.”
“We love this community and will do everything we can to help rebuild and support,” she added. “Thanks for everyone for checking on us and offering us help. Altadena strong.”
Not long after that heartbreaking post, Moore shared a GoFundMe page for her brother and his wife.
“Yesterday, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law Griff & Kit lost their home and everything they own in the Eaton Fire,” she wrote in the caption. “With their first baby on the way in a matter of weeks, they need our support now more than ever.”
“Griff is a touring musician and also lost his entire arsenal of drums/percussion he uses to make a living,” the caption continued. “It’s all so much. So many have asked how to help during this unimaginable and stressful time…Please consider donating and sharing to help them rebuild.”
Soon, however, instead of having followers pouring in love and strength like they did before, Moore was a target for haters. To them, it felt absurd for a star like Moore to be asking for donations.
“You can’t help them? Your millionaires????” one comment read. “Before donating, ask yourself ‘Would these people be offering to help me in my time of need?’ Spoiler alert: they wouldn’t,” wrote another commenter. “So why the hell are you even inclined to donate?!? Find a normal person who is needing help and help them instead.”
Given the backlash, the This Is Us star left an unapologetic note in her caption.
“And people questioning whether we’re helping out our own family or attributing some arbitrary amount of money Google says someone has is NOT helpful or empathetic,” she wrote. “Of course we are.”
“Our buddy Matt started this GoFundMe me and I’m sharing because people have asked how they can help them,” she explained. “We just lost most of our life in a fire too. Kindly F OFF. No one is forcing you to do anything.”
Luckily, Moore has some followers standing up for her too. “Hey guys! You don’t need to donate if you don’t want to/cannot!” one commenter wrote. “Go help other families, no need to comment such ridiculously cucky things!! Thank you peace and love!!”
With so much negativity on her social media right now, we’re hoping Moore can focus on her family and rebuilding her home right now. Our hearts go out to them at this time.
