What next for Rodrigo Bentancur? The latest on Spurs midfielder’s return
An update has emerged regarding Rodrigo Bentancur after the midfielder suffered a horror injury and was stretchered off in Tottenham’s Carabao Cup win over Liverpool on Wednesday.
Rodrigo Bentancur collapses in a scary incident
Early in Wednesday’s semifinal clash, Bentancur dived for the ball and seemed to knock his head against the turf in the process. His Tottenham teammates immediately signalled for the medical staff to come on, indicating that the situation was serious.
The medics continued treating the midfielder on the pitch for over 10 minutes before he was stretchered off the field.
Thankfully, the Tottenham man appears to be okay, as he posted an update on social media confirming that it was “all good” and congratulating the side for their 1-0 win.
What caused Rodrigo Bentancur’s injury?
Tottenham have not yet provided an official update on what happened to Bentancur and why exactly he went down against Liverpool.
There has been plenty of speculation on social media regarding what it could have been, and The Daily Star have now spoken to a medical expert, who believes that the 27-year-old might have been severely concussed when his head hit the floor.
But Dr Gareth Nye, a lecturer in Biomedical Science at the University of Salford, told the outlet: “Having watched the video slowed down, you can see he twists his head to get to the ball. And as he lands on the pitch, the side of his head hits the ground with some force to the point his head bounces back up again.
“The brain is protected by the skull, however in cases of trauma like this the brain actually bangs against the inside of the skull leading to bruising and as the brain is damaged it very often causes a loss of consciousness, blurred vision and it can disrupt breathing patterns.
“My best guess would be Bentancur had quite a bad case of concussion and thankfully seems to be in good shape afterwards.”
Tottenham’s plans for Rodrigo Bentancur
The Sun have now revealed that the Spurs man will be ‘kept away’ from Hotspur Way over the coming days and will continue resting at home.
The club’s medical staff will regularly make trips to Bentancur’s residence to make checks on him and the player will not be allowed back to training until they give the all-clear.
How many games will Bentancur miss?
The same report confirms that at this point, it is not known exactly how long the former Juventus man will be out for and when he will be ready to go back onto the pitch.
Spurs are said to be hopeful that Bentancur will be back in training ‘sooner rather than later’.
However, Postecoglou‘s men could be without the Uruguayan for the big North London derby against Arsenal next week.
