Biden’s Bizarre Confession Should Infuriate Democrats
President Joe Biden’s staff has done their best to keep him insulated from the press throughout the duration of his presidency. For years on end, they denied media outlets from having sit-down interviews with him. This deflection even led to a flare-up in relations with the New York Times, which publicly called it “troubling” that Biden “has so actively and effectively avoided questions from independent journalists during his term.”
Well, Biden has now finally done a long-form interview with USA Today, and it’s easy to see why the president was shielded from such interviews — plus hidden away to such an extent that even White House residence staff were prevented from having contact with him. The man stumbles through every sentence, his jokes are simply awkward, and the clarity of his thoughts can only be described as poor. But worse, Biden says stupid things that demonstrate the terrible decline of his political acumen.
On this occasion, he made the remark that he “doesn’t know” if he would have had the vigor to serve another four years in office. This from the man who until six months ago was seeking a second term as president of the United States — and who, moreover, has been engaged in a revenge tour of sorts over the past month in which he has repeatedly claimed that he could have won the election had he not dropped out. This escalated to the point that he even suggested to his advisers that he regretted dropping out of the race.
In response to USA Today reporter Lisa Page’s question, “Do you think you would’ve had the vigor to serve another four years in office?”, the president responded:
I don’t know. That’s why I thought when I first announced, talking to Barack about it, I said I thought I was the person. I had no intention of running after Beau died — for real, not a joke. And then when Trump was running again for reelection, I really thought I had the best chance of beating him. But I also wasn’t looking to be president when I was 85 years old, 86 years old. And so I did talk about passing the baton. But I don’t know. Who the hell knows? So far, so good. But who knows what I’m going to be when I’m 86 years old?
Biden is 82 years old. That means that were he to have been reelected, he would have turned 86 years old during his second term.
With his comments, Biden shows that he didn’t even think to consider the ramifications of being commander-in-chief at an advanced age. It was just: “But I don’t know. Who the hell knows?” — accompanied by a nonchalant “But who knows what I’m going to be when I’m 86 years old?”
Biden might as well exist in a vacuum. Democrats are furious at him for his decision to seek reelection and his failure to not step aside sooner — all on account of his age. This anger is leaving his legacy in shambles. He will now be remembered by Democrats only for enabling Donald Trump’s return to the White House because of his selfish desire to cling to power until well past his prime. As just one example, Washington Post columnist Matt Bai said this week that Biden’s legacy would be that he “didn’t know when to leave.”
Biden doesn’t have the wherewithal to offer a reasonable explanation in an attempt to save his legacy. It’s just “But I don’t know. Who the hell knows? So far, so good.”
