Do you need to use a blinker at roundabouts in NYS?
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Whether you call it a roundabout, rotary, or traffic circle, the Capital Region has its fair share. But do you need to use your turn signal when going through one?
According to Kittelson & Associates, a firm that specializes in transportation matters, New York has over 260 roundabouts. In the Capital Region, the most notable roundabouts are in Slingerlands, East Greenbush, Rotterdam, Malta, and Round Lake.
According to the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT), there's a lesser chance of traffic crashes at roundabouts, which leads to safer intersections. Roundabouts are also more aesthetically pleasing, said DOT.
When it comes to driving through a roundabout, you must yield the right-of-way to those already in the roundabout or pedestrians in the crosswalk, said DOT. If you're taking the immediate right-hand turn through the roundabout, you must turn on your right turn signal and then enter the roundabout, when safe, to take the turn.
If you're taking another exit through the roundabout, you must use your right turn signal once you approach your exit. DOT said that would be as soon as you pass the exit before the one you're taking.
