ODOT reminds drivers to be careful in hazardous conditions
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to take precautions when driving in snowy conditions.
According to ODOT, crews are out Thursday treating the roads in southwest and southcentral parts of Oklahoma. They are plowing and treating the H.E. Bailey, Chickasaw and Indian Nation turnpikes and treating slick spots on the John Kilpatrick, Kickapoo and Turner turnpikes.
Crews are also working in the Oklahoma City metro plowing and treating highways and interstates. Drivers should be careful traveling on highways, bridges and overpasses as they may be slick. Avoid travel if you can or slow down to accommodate the weather.
ODOT is asking motorists to:
- Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment and do not pass; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
- Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
- Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
- Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
