Kim Jones Returns to His Roots: Spring Dior and KAWS Capsule
Dior has a new look. Perhaps you’ll spot it as a cool flash of green, slithering across fluorescent orange fabric — or, just as likely, painted white and perched atop a navy baseball cap. No matter which garment catches your eye, however, there’s no mistaking the shape of bubbly, electric D-I-O-R loops. Just in time for spring, Dior and KAWS have hatched a stylish snake and a charming capsule to match.
“I wanted to have something fun,” Jones explained to WWD. That much is clear: the Spring Dior and KAWS Capsule is laced with luminous neon graphics, lighting up the somber winter sky. Quilted shirts, rendered in fresh pastel pink or timeless obsidian, retain the recognizable Cannage pattern. Spun from soft fabrics, the capsule features a range of silhouettes; loose trousers pair with fitted cardigans for a cozy take on streetwear.
The new, reptilian take on ‘Dior’ adorns a slew of new styles, shape-shifting into the instantly-recognizable CD logo as it appears on varsity jackets and B35 nxxt sneakers. “It’s a bit like Pop Art,” Jones says of the collaborative capsule. “KAWS is incredible as a person and an artist. He is someone I really admire. It was a pleasure working with him for the summer 2019 collection, and now, I thought that it might be good to bring back a KAWS element.”
In the dreary dawn of January, KAWS’ vibrant designs are a welcome refresh. Of course, as Jones noted, the two have teamed up before. Just a few years earlier, Kim Jones tapped KAWS to work on the SS19 collection for Dior Homme — Jones’ first launch as creative director. In the time since, KAWS has gained notoriety with an ensemble of cartoon-like creatures, which manifest in sculptures and paintings alike. The New York artist brought his affable characters to the Art Gallery of Ontario with the 2023 show, KAWS: FAMILY, adding a Canadian exhibition to his already-robust resume.
Coming on the heels of 2024’s collaboration with Otani Workshop, the Spring Dior and KAWS Capsule doubles down on bold palettes. Radiant colours splash across the collection, spilling into every category: a bright yellow shade rejuvenates knitwear seams and sneaker laces alike. With sleek tailoring and unapologetic graphics, the capsule synthesizes high-fashion elegance with the daring nature of street art.
