What your trainers REALLY say about you – and the star-loved trend that really screams you’re BORING

The ‘in’ trainers to be seen in can move as quickly as the next big fashion trend. 

One minute a brand is hot topic with the trainer of the season and the next it’s last seasons news. 

Which can actually make trainers pretty tricky to buy, especially if you’re someone who likes to keep up with the trends.

As they don’t come cheap, with a pair often costing in the region of up to £100. 

Shopping app LTK revealed this week that the Adidas Spezial’s in brown were one of the most sought after products coming into January.

So what exactly does your choice of trainer say about you.

From eco warriors to fashion sheep, here Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale gives the lowdown. 

Adidas – FASHION ‘SHEEP’

Adidas has taken over as the top ‘it’ trainer brand of the past few years and they don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. 

Starting strong with the Sambas, a trainer which this year will have been around for 75 years, the trainer style became so popular that videos were going viral last year showing a multitude of people wearing them on the same train.

Hoards of celebrities have also been seen out in them, including Gigi Hadid wearing a pair of blue and yellow trainers whilst in New York.

Even former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wore a pair, causing uproar. 

Other popular Adidas styles include Gazelle’s and Spezial’s, the latter proving to be currently very popular and hard to get hold of. 

Wearing this style of trainer shows that you like to follow the crowd, keep up with the trends and have the latest must-have fashion items. 

You care what people think and how you look, taking pride in your appearance.

However, it can also show that you don’t have your own fashion identity and are a bit of a sheep. 

Skechers – BORING

The American brand has been around on the footwear market for the best part of three decades, but has never been seen as the trendiest of trainers. 

Using celebrities as marketing, over the years it has used the likes of Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears. 

More recently over in the UK Myleene Klass and Jamie Redknapp have been fronting the campaigns. 

However, no matter what celebrity has been promoting the product the brand still does come with a certain stigma.

Practicality is at the heart, cushioned soles, easy to slip on and breathable, they come with a lot of functions for those who think comfort is key. 

Wearing Skechers shows you are non plussed on trends, you’re all about the practicality, no frills, no fuss and can sometimes border on being uptight and a bit boring. 

Vans – LIVING IN THE PAST

Originally made as a skateboarding brand, it went mainstream in the 2000s with its classic black and white checker board trainers that were deemed the height of cool. 

Whilst they were never the style of trainers worn to the likes of the gym, they were great worn with the likes of jeans, trousers and dresses for the skater girls. 

The whose who of Hollywood celebrities were seen out in them from Rihanna to Justin Bieber.

However these days they’ve fallen slightly off the radar, which means if you’re still wearing them you live in the past and can’t quite move on, whilst you know what you like and may have a particular style, you don’t conform to the masses. 

Hoka – FITNESS FANATIC 

A trainer brand specialising solely in running shoes the brand was launched in 2009 and has become a staple in runners wardrobes all across the world. 

Consistently voted as some of the best running shoes you can buy, they have trainers categorised depending on what kind of exercise you are doing, from road running to hiking and even recovery trainers.

And while they may be great when it comes to exercise, that is where they should stay.

If you wear yours as your day to day trainers you want the world to know that you’re into your fitness and that is your personality. 

Your body is your temple and you care more about your health than your fashion. 

Nike – MILLENNIAL 

A long standing competition with Adidas, Nike has also been one of the market leaders when it comes to trainers. 

Thanks to iconic collaborations with Michael Jordan which in turn created Air Jordan’s, it has created a legacy of memorabilia when it comes to trainers, with many people having them as collectables.

Air Force 1’s are the brands best selling shoe of all time.

First released in the 80’s they made another resurgence a few years ago with the all white low top style becoming the trainer to be seen in. 

They may have been the in shoe back in 2018, but they’re not in 2025, meaning if you still rock a pair you want to keep to a trend but aren’t a stickler, you know a good made trainer when you see one and love the cleanliness the all white style brings. 

Whilst you may not be the most fashionable you know what you like and are a force to be reckoned with. 

Veja – TIGHT 

The new kid on the block in the world of trainers, the French footwear brand has actually been around since 2005, but only gained major popularity a few years ago. 

Sustainability is the key take on these trainers, being made from organic cotton and recycled plastic bottles, it tries to be as environmentally friendly as possible. 

With its signature V detail down the sides of the trainers coming in an array of different colours, the trainers became an instant hit without using the usual marketing techniques. 

Seen on every celebrity going, even royalty hopped on board the trend with both the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Sussex seen out in a pair.

However, the buzz around these has now died down and the fashion crowd have moved onto their next pair of trainers. 

Meaning that those left wearing Veja’s are the kind of people who get their wear out of everything until it falls apart. 

Which you may think means those who can look rather unkept, but wearing Veja’s shows you have some money, meaning therefore you’re just a bit tight.
