Bahrain calls for lifting sanctions on Syria
Abdul Latif Al-Zayani, the Foreign Minister of Bahrain, led a high-level delegation to meet with Ahmad Shar, the President of the Syrian Interim Government in Damascus. The meeting took place on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, in the Syrian capital.
During the meeting, Al-Zayani discussed the issue of lifting sanctions against Syria. He expressed Bahrain’s support for efforts aimed at easing the international restrictions imposed on the country, signaling a shift towards diplomacy.
The two leaders also engaged in discussions regarding various bilateral issues and regional developments. Al-Zayani and Shar addressed key areas of cooperation between their respective governments and explored avenues for future collaboration.
This visit follows a previous trip by a Bahraini delegation, led by Ahmad bin Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, the head of Bahrain’s Strategic Security Agency, who met with Ahmad Shar earlier.
Additionally, on December 12, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa sent a message to Ahmad Shar, expressing Bahrain’s willingness to offer assistance to Syria during its ongoing crisis. This is part of Bahrain’s broader diplomatic engagement with Syria.
The ongoing diplomatic efforts, including Bahrain’s engagement with Syria, suggest a potential shift towards reconciliation and rebuilding the war-torn country. However, the long-standing issues surrounding Syria’s internal conflict and its international relations will require sustained commitment from all involved parties to achieve lasting peace and stability.
