How Manhattan residents can get help clearing snow
MANHATTAN (KSNT) - Residents in the Little Apple saw more than a foot of snow this weekend, and are still living with it.
Manhattan received 15 inches of snow this weekend: some of the most snow the town has ever seen. Many driveways and sidewalks are covered, and Habitat for Humanity of the Northern Flint Hills saw an opportunity to help.
The organization started a Google sheet for people to sign up if they need a helping hand.
"We put the sheet up yesterday morning and just encouraged neighbors who needed some support to put their name and their address on the sheet and other neighbors to look on the sheet and see if there's someone near them that they could get out and help shovel," Josh Brewer, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of the Northern Flint Hills, said.
This initiative is called Neighbors Helping Neighbors, and while Habitat for Humanity started it, the organization hopes neighbors will help if they see someone they know on the list.
"People see that other people need a little support, Brewer said. "They've cleared off their driveway, so they jump over there and help out. And that's the best part about living in a neighborhood with other people and just encouraging us to build that civic capacity here in the city."
Earlier Wednesday, there were more than 40 people needing help, while at least 15 people have already been helped by some friendly neighbors since the sheet was created.
"I think that the best part of the community is people taking challenges into their own hands and solving it themselves," Brewer said. "And so, if I can play a part in that, I do live right around the corner. So this is one of my neighbors. So this is a great opportunity to serve."
If you need help or want to help, click here to access the sheet. Brewer told 27 News Habitat for Humanity will monitor the sheet until it's empty and everyone has been helped.
