Amnesty International urges Pakistan to end arbitrary detention of Afghan migrants
Amnesty International has called on the Pakistani government to stop the arbitrary detention and harassment of Afghan migrants.
Babu Ram Pant, the Deputy Regional Director of Amnesty International, stated on Wednesday, January 8, that the Pakistani government has repeatedly and arbitrarily implemented policies that have worsened the situation for Afghan refugees, forcing many to return to Afghanistan.
He added, “The nightly police raids, harassment, and arbitrary detention of hundreds of Afghan refugees, including women and children, in the capital are part of a broader discriminatory policy against Afghans within the country.”
Amnesty International emphasized that the Pakistani government has even detained individuals with legal documents, which has led to further harassment and mistreatment of these individuals.
The organization has urged Pakistan to adhere to its international commitments, including the principle of non-refoulement for refugees.
In recent weeks, Pakistani police have significantly increased the detention of Afghan migrants in Islamabad.
It is noteworthy that these detentions have intensified following recent security and political tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan.
Amnesty International has called for an immediate halt to the discriminatory practices against Afghan refugees in Pakistan. The organization believes that the detention and harassment of vulnerable individuals violate basic human rights and international norms.
The international community must hold Pakistan accountable for upholding its responsibilities to protect refugees and ensure their safety. Only through such efforts can the rights of Afghan migrants be safeguarded and their dignity respected.
