Oscars nominations delayed until Sunday, Jan. 19 amid L.A. fires
The Academy Awards announced on Wednesday that the Oscar noms have been delayed two days amid the L.A. fires, to allow the nearly 10,000 members some extra time to vote.
Now, the 2025 Oscars nominations will be announced on Sunday, Jan. 19 — the time of day is still to be determined — as opposed to Friday, Jan. 17. And the voting period, which opened on Jan. 8, will be extended two extra days, from Jan. 12 to Jan. 14. Conan O’Brien is still set to host the 97th kudos on Sun, Mar. 2, which will air on ABC and stream on Hulu.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer told members via email, “We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California. So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you.”
The news comes as many other industry events have been postponed or outright canceled because of the L.A. inferno, which began in the Pacific Palisades on Jan. 7 and quickly spread to other areas. The Critics Choice Awards moved from Jan. 19 to Jan. 26, the SAG Awards nominations scrapped its live presentation on Jan. 8, and the AFI Awards Luncheon, the BAFTA Tea Party, and the premieres of The Last Showgirl, Better Man, Unstoppable, The Pitt, and Wolf Man will no longer take place as scheduled.
Also canceled by the wildfires are the in-person “bake-off” events in Los Angeles. That’s where sound, hair & makeup, and visual effects contenders on the shortlist showcase their work to others within their branches. Bake-offs for sound in the Bay Area, New York, and London are not affected, while hair & makeup and visual effects bake-offs are now being reconceived as virtual discussions.
UPDATE: Late on Wednesday, WGA West & WGA East announced that they would be delaying the Writers Guild Awards nominations from Thursday, Jan. 9 until Monday, Jan. 13, due to Los Angeles being “under a state of emergency.”
