Wintry Dallas weather could delay Ohio State fans' plans for Cotton Bowl
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Some Buckeye fans are traveling to Dallas, Texas for the Cotton Bowl Friday night, where Ohio State takes on Texas in a playoff semifinal. But wintry weather is expected to hit the Lone Star State right as many fans head out on flights.
This could mean some travel hiccups as Cotton Bowl staff down in Texas are getting ready for the game. Scottie Rodgers, the Vice President of Communications for the Cotton Bowl, said roads around the domed AT&T Stadium in Arlington have been salted and brined.
“Around the game and around Arlington and AT&T Stadium, making sure that people can have the safest possible experience that they can based on whatever the weather might be that day and that’s what we’ve been working towards,” said Rodgers.
Although this is great for when fans arrive in Texas, it’s getting there that could present a challenge. Snow and ice are expected in Dallas Thursday and Friday. Kara Hitchen with AAA Ohio urged travelers to be prepared. “It’s going to be tricky so I would say, most importantly, be flexible. Know that you may have to change your plans at a moment’s notice,” said Hitchens.
She suggested getting to the airport extra early, downloading the airline’s app so travelers get notifications of any changes and getting travel insurance, especially because the snow and ice hitting Texas may end up in central Ohio soon.
“What they’re getting on Thursday and Friday likely will get to us Saturday or Sunday so if you do get there, great. You may have a little harder time getting back home too,” said Hitchens.
Rodgers with the Cotton Bowl said he expects the game to go on as planned Friday night. But with the potential for snow and ice, fans should know that it’s going to be busy so use caution. “North Texas and Texas in general is very large so people are coming from a lot of different directions when it comes to it. So coming from one direction may look a little different than coming from another direction,” said Rodgers. “Be safe. Start early. Drive slow.”
When it comes to flying, Hitchens said airlines want to get people to their destinations as soon as possible. She said fans will get to Dallas but be patient as everyone navigates the weather. Follow this link for Cotton Bowl officials' latest statement on the incoming winter weather
