Sleeping man rescued from fire in abandoned house in Lafayette
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A man squatting in an abandoned house in Lafayette was rescued from a fire in the house this morning, authorities said.
Lafayette firefighters responded to a 911 call at 8:38 a.m. today of smoke coming from a vacant home in the 1100 block of Cameron Street. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the abandoned property. First responders entered the house and discovered a small fire in a bedroom and a man sleeping on a mattress. Firefighters awakened the man and took him out of the smoke-filled house, authorities said.
The fire burned a small hole through the floor. The fire damage was contained to that room.
There were signs that the man has been squatting in the vacant dwelling, officials said. Evidence of two other old fires were found, likely from a candle, according to investigators.
Lafayette Police Department arrived on scene to assist with trespassing, and firefighters boarded the door and window up prior to leaving the scene. Charges, if any, were not released.
