Schenectady schools fully launch new security system
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The Schenectady City School District launched its new security system on Wednesday morning. School officials said the first day of operation went smoother than two soft launches on Monday and Tuesday.
The weapon detection system requires students to put their Chromebooks, cell phones, and other items in their backpacks before entering the building. Students then put the bag through the detection system in a try, similar to an airport's security process.
Officials said they will continue to familiarize themselves with the equipment, eventually streamlining the scanning process. The security system was installed after several fights at the beginning of the academic year, one involving a student who brought a knife. The middle school will have a security system by the end of February.
