Capitol Police stop man carrying machete into visitor center as Jimmy Carter lies in state
U.S. Capitol Police arrested a man who allegedly tried to bring a machete and other knives into the Capitol Visitor Center as former President Jimmy Carter laid in state in the Rotunda.
In a notice on the X (formerly Twitter) social media platform, Capitol Police announced officers had stopped a man after spotting the machete.
"During security screening at the CVC's north doors, our officers spotted a machete in the man's bag, stopped the x-ray machine, arrested the man, and secured the machete," the statement said. "Three knives were also found in the bag, along with the machete. Security screening was temporarily stopped at the north side of the Capitol Visitor Center while we investigated."

The man was charged with Carrying a Dangerous Weapon. His identity was not immediately released.
Carter, the 39th president, laid in state on Wednesday ahead of state funeral rites on Thursday. President Joe Biden was expected to deliver a eulogy at Washington National Cathedral.
