BMW reveals futuristic in-car iDrive system that beams directions onto the windscreen – and it’s coming this year

BMW is driving into the future with a whole new take on decluttering the dashboard and simplifying directions.

The German automotive giant will beam navigational arrows onto windscreen so you never have to take your eyes off the road.

Along the lower section of the windscreen users will also find a huge pillar to pillar display that projects different information and content with 3D effects.

And it’ll be visible for both the driver and passengers from any angle.

The most important bits of information, such as speed and range, will stay permanently on the driver’s side.

But you can personalise what appears on the opposite end with other apps like Spotify or BMW‘s voice-powered assistant.

And there will still be a touch-sensitive central display that allows you to select wider options next to the steering wheel too.

The changes are part of BMW’s new iDrive system which will come to an upcoming X-class SUV that’s due to be announced later in the year.

BMW showed off the new displays at an event the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Other innovations unveiled include a revamped steering wheel with haptic feedback vibrations for buttons.

“High tech meets highly intuitive operation – a quarter of a century of pioneering work and technological leadership in operating concepts has been channelled into the new BMW Panoramic iDrive,” said Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Development.

“The foundations are provided by the new BMW Operating System X.

“With this advance, we are giving one of the world’s best and most comprehensive infotainment systems even greater capability and once again setting the industry benchmark in multimodal interaction.

“Starting with the first series-produced Neue Klasse model at the end of this year, the new BMW Panoramic iDrive will form an integral part of all future BMW models.”

BMW has also jumped on the AI craze.

Their AI learns as you drive and will make suggestions, such as whether you use Sports mode on a certain stretch of road every time on your way home from work.
