Man charged with attempted murder in New Year's Day Lafayette shooting
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- An arrest has been made in the gunfight in Lafayette that included an officer-involved shooting early New Year's Day, authorities said.
Damon Guillot, 19, of Marksville, is charged with attempted second degree murder, unlawful possession of a machine gun and illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities. Guillot is being held on $320,000 bond, according to jail records.
Guillot's brother, Daykwon Guillot, 21, of Marksville, was also arrested in connection with the incident. He is charged with illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities and simple property damage. He was released on undisclosed bond Friday.
Lafayette Police spokesperson Sgt. Robin Green said more arrests are expected in the case.
Lafayette Police Department responded at approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday to the Waffle House in the 2100 block of NE Evangeline Thruway following reports of multiple gunshots. Upon arrival, an officer encountered two groups of individuals actively exchanging gunfire. The officer discharged their firearm in response to the threat, officials said.
State Police said the person shot by police was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The investigation into the officer involvement is ongoing.
Green also said off-duty Lafayette Police officers will provide security for the restaurant going forward, as it has in the past.
"Well as a precaution to help with preventing incidents like this from happening previously, we used to do security for the Waffle House establishment," Green said. "Well, that security now has been reinstated and we will have officers doing off duty security at that establishment."
