Amorim: We have to give everything for our special fans
Manchester United left Anfield on Sunday with a well deserved point, following the 2-2 draw, but are entitled to feel it could have been more.
As was the case at Old Trafford last season, Liverpool relied on a contentious penalty to claim a point, while Harry Maguire missed a golden chance at the death to win the game but put his shot over the bar.
Speaking after the game, Amorim paid tribute to the fans and insisted we would see improvements in performances going forward.
I’m from a different culture, we are losing so many games and, in the end, you have the supporters clapping and pushing for us. It’s a special place and they’re special fans. So we have to give everything. We have to face every game in this way. I don’t want to say that it was the training that made us perform well. I will say it again, it’s the way we face the game, it’s the way we are competitive, not just training. Of course, we are going to improve with training but I don’t want to use that, it’s the way we face the game and, for that, you don’t need training.
For the first time in years, United controlled the game at Anfield, but Amorim is reluctant to claim this is a step forward, as there needs to be more consistency in our performances first.
I think we controlled the game very well. Every time Liverpool had a chance, we controlled. We had the ball for some moments and that makes the difference. You can see during the game it was not like we were suffering all the time because we control the ball, sometimes winning fouls, controlling the transitions. So I think it was a good game.
When we are focused, when we fight for the ball, when we suffer, when we finish the game we are really, really tired. I think we can be a good team. If you don’t do that all the time, we are going to lose games like in the last weeks. We have to start, some day, to be consistent. Not in the way we play but the way we face the competition. So let’s start today.
I don’t like to say that today is a step forward. I don’t know, I will do my job and, tomorrow, I will do the same things. We need to show the same mentality tomorrow in training. If we relax tomorrow, the same thing will happen again. It’s also my job, so I guarantee you I’m really trying on the basics. So we have to move on and congratulations to the lads for the performance but not for the result.
