NYC subway rider stabbed multiple times: 'He became irate'
MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A New York City subway rider says he was stabbed multiple times on New Year’s Day after telling another person to stop spitting at him.
The stabbing happened at the Cathedral Parkway–110th Street station on Manhattan’s Upper West Side around 9:30 a.m., according to the MTA.
The victim, 30-year-old Marqeise Imbert, said he was riding on a southbound No. 1 train when another subway rider started spitting toward him. Imbert said the man became angry when he told him to stop.
“He became irate,” Imbert said. “His response was way more aggressive than I thought it would be. We started going back and forth. And he was like, ‘I’ll spit on you.’”
Imbert said the man followed him off the train at the Cathedral Parkway–110th Street station. The argument turned violent on the downtown platform.
“I thought we were going to have a fight, but I guess he had different intentions,” Imbert said.
Imbert said the man stabbed him about five or six times throughout his body. He was hospitalized and is now recovering.
His attacker fled and hasn’t been arrested. Imbert said police retrieved surveillance video from the platform, but he’s concerned detectives will have a difficult time catching the suspect because he was wearing a ski mask.
In hindsight, Imbert said the man was likely looking for a fight.
“He was laid out spread across taking up seats with his legs. And for you to be spitting on a crowded train, you were just looking for somebody to go back and forth with,” Imbert said.
