Roy Wood Jr. Seeks Connection in Lonely Flowers
There was a time in the not-so-distant past when people knew their neighbors’ names, made polite chitchat with strangers, and believed in fostering community — so say your older relatives unprompted at every conceivable opportunity. Fortunately, this demographic now has a sage spokesperson who is much better at articulating this point of view than they are: comedian Roy Wood Jr. “What happened to connection?” the comedian wonders in his upcoming Hulu special, Lonely Flowers. “It’s gone!” Isolationism is noticeable in even the unlikeliest settings, and he offers some proof. “I saw somebody get bad service at the gun range!” he says, gobsmacked. “How you gon’ be rude to someone who showed up to practice murder?”
Filmed at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C., and directed by C. Craig Patterson, Lonely Flowers marks Wood’s first stand-up special since 2021’s Imperfect Messenger and the first since he left his role as Daily Show correspondent in October 2023 after eight years. He’s kept busy since as the host of Have I Got News for You on CNN and by honing this latest hour of stand-up on the road. Lonely Flowers is the third special released by Hulu under its new Hularious programming banner.
Help Wood find the connection he’s searching for by watching Lonely Flowers when it premieres on January 17.
