These blocked pipes can have deadly consequences warns RCEM
RILEY COUNTY (KSNT) - Riley County Emergency Management (RCEM) is warning Kansans that some blocked pipes on their home could have deadly consequences in the winter.
On Monday, Jan. 6 RCEM reminded residents to make sure gas furnace and water heater pipes on the outside of homes don't get blocked and cause carbon monoxide to build up in their home.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless odorless gas that can cause sudden illness or death if inhaled, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Household items such as furnaces, generators and charcoal grills can produce the poison gas.
Common symptoms of CO poisoning include headaches, dizziness, weakness, vomiting, chest pain and confusion.
RCEM says to look around the outside of your house to see where your exhaust pipes go. When vents are near the ground you should make sure they aren't blocked with snow.
