Markham Elementary reopens after January 2024 ice storm
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- After a year, students are finally returning to Markham Elementary School in Southwest Portland.
The school was forced to close last January after an ice storm blanketed the city and caused massive damage.
Markham was forced to close its doors for hazardous material cleanup and was initially set to reopen in February 2024, but the date was moved back due to funding setbacks.
Since then, students have been sharing classrooms with Jackson Middle School.
On Tuesday morning, the school finally reopened its doors to students with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an open house to see all the repairs and upgrades.
School is set to resume at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday following a short assembly.
