Peacock begins developing reboot of Portland-filmed series 'Grimm'
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland-filmed series that followed a homicide detective for six seasons is getting a second life from a leading streaming service.
As first reported by Deadline, Peacock is producing a film adaptation of “Grimm.” From 2011 to 2017, the NBC drama starred David Giuntoli as Nick Burkhardt: a detective who learns he has descended from a bloodline of people who hunt supernatural forces.
Deadline revealed that “Drop Dead Diva” creator Josh Berman is behind the new adaptation, and will work alongside some of the original “Grimm” team. This includes co-creators and co-producers David Greenwalt, Jim Kouf, Sean Hayes, Hazy Mills Productions and Universal Television.
The TV series was loosely based on folklore published by a late sibling duo known as the Brothers Grimm. A similar show titled “Brother Grimm” was initially in development at CBS, but was ultimately canceled due to the 2008 Writers Guild of America strike.
Following the finale of “Grimm,” NBC began developing a spinoff that centered on a female protagonist instead. It appears that the network abandoned its plan.
Peacock’s reboot of the series is “still in the early stages of development,” according to the Oregon Film Office. Executive Director Tim Williams told KOIN 6 there aren’t many details about the exact setting and storyline of the film.
“That said, we are grateful and proud of the many years that the GRIMM TV series spent in Oregon and we would very much welcome back any GRIMM projects in the future,” Williams added in a statement. “During its seven years of production in and around Portland the series spent more than $315M in the state impacting nearly 3000 jobs.”
The 163-episode series featured many locations throughout the Portland area, including Multnomah Falls, the Stark Street Bridge and the Gus J. Solomon U.S. Courthouse.
