Coldest point of winter passes, where do Portland temps head from here?
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Portland has now overcome the coldest point of winter as average daytime highs begin to warm starting Tuesday.
Portland's average daytime high temperatures have been falling since the peak of summer. The coldest average daytime high temperature is 46 degrees and is seen from December 17 to January 6. That's the coldest point of winter in regard to Portland's average daytime highs.
The new average daytime temperature for January 7 is 47 degrees. It's not much of an improvement, but it's the start of the warming trend towards summer. From this point on in the season, Portland's average daytime high will no longer fall.
However, warmer average daytime high temperatures don't mean Portland's seen the last cold air of the season. Temperatures frequently rise and fall above and below the average temperature. Monday's high in the mid-50s put Portland nearly 10 degrees above the average of 46 degrees. That means below-average temperatures are likely over the next several months of winter.
So, although Portland's average daytime high temperatures are now on the rise doesn't mean we've felt the worst of what winter has to offer.
