Season one of The Last of Us concluded on a harrowing note, with Joel making a devastating decision that would forever alter his relationship with Ellie.
In a desperate bid to save her, Joel slaughtered an entire hospital of Firefly resistance fighters, who were planning to sacrifice Ellie to develop a cure for the Cordyceps infection.
Unaware of the true events, Ellie awoke from anesthesia and questioned Joel about what had transpired.
Joel, determined to shield her from the painful truth, lied, claiming the experiment had been unsuccessful.
When Ellie pressed him to swear he was telling the truth, Joel did so without hesitation, despite knowing he was deepening the deceit.
Season two will begin with a time jump, as the synopsis reads: “Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
In addition to Kaitlyn Dever, Jeffery Wright and Isabela Merced, the season two cast newbies include: Young Mazino (BEEF), Danny Ramirez (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Ariela Barer (Runaways), Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Spencer Lord (Heartland).
Series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have indicated that the show will likely go at least three seasons.
Fans have taken to social media, expressing their excitement and admitting they’re “not prepared” for the emotional rollercoaster that awaits.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one said: “Soooo excited…. but definitely not prepared!”
Another added: “Season 1 had me hooked! Such a great show – ready for season 2!”
A third penned: “April can’t come soon enough Can’t wait to see what’s in store for Season 2 of #TheLastOfUs“
With its blend of heart-wrenching storytelling and edge-of-your-seat action, The Last of Us is shaping up to be one of the most eagerly awaited releases of the year.
