“I was with one of my really dear friends, and we were cleaning out the closet and picking out an outfit for him for the funeral,” Allison told People about finding a stash of drugs.
“It was a really triggering moment for me because there were a lot of things I discovered in our closet that I did not know existed. It was very alarming to me to learn that there was so much happening that I had no clue [about]. It was a really scary moment in my life to figure that out, but it also helped me process that he was going through so much and he was hiding so much, and there must have been a lot of shame in that,” she said.
She says she found a “cornucopia” of drugs including pills, mushrooms, and “other substances I had to look up on my phone” hidden inside some shoe boxes.
She also shared that they were very open about his marijuana use, and he would head to their guest house after their kids were asleep to have alone time.
“That was his alone time. It was his time to recharge, and that was okay,” she shared.
About coping with his death, she shared, “Reading Stephen‘s journals, and even going back into the books he had read and the things that he was highlighting and lining, really gave me a better perspective of where he was in life and the type of things he was struggling with. It did have me feel a lot of empathy towards him and sadness for all the pain that he was holding.”
Around the time of his passing, he was going through some issues but Allison says he was “very careful about this wording.”
He was bathing less frequently, had become more withdrawn, and, to her, “It seemed like, ‘Oh, he’s taking a resting period,’ which he would say he’s never had.”
His mom revealed his finals text before his death.
Our continued thoughts are with Stephen‘s friends, family, and loved ones.
