Johnstown Superintendent of Schools announces retirement
JOHNSTOWN, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Effective August 9, Dr. William Crankshaw, superintendent of schools at the Greater Johnstown School District (GJSD), will retire. The school district made the announcement on Friday.
Crankshaw's retirement will end his 36-year career in the education field. From choral music teacher for 13 years to Principal of Glebe Street Elementary for four years to Superintendent of Schools for five years, Crankshaw served the GJSD for 22 years.
Before his experience at the GJSD, Crankshaw taught music at both the Fort Plain and Canajoharie Central School Districts. He served as Elementary Principal, Director of Elementary Curriculum & Instruction, and Committee on Special Education Chairperson at the Northville Central School District.
Crankshaw also had experience as Superintendent at both the Remsen Central School District and the Cooperstown Central School District. He had graduated from Johnstown High School in 1984 and according to the GJSD, Crankshaw had wanted to serve the Johnstown community as Superintendent since grade school.
The school district's Board of Education will soon announce details on the steps the district will take when hiring a new Superintendent.
“If one is very lucky, retirement is a celebration of bridges built and work well done in a place one will forever love and in a profession that one continues to be passionate about,” Crankshaw said in a written message to all GJSD staff. “I feel like one of the lucky ones.”
