Schenectady basketball star, judge Barry Kramer dies
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Local basketball legend and longtime judge Barry Kramer died on January 4. He was 82.
Born in Schenectady on November 10, 1942, Kramer went to Linton High School in Schenectady, where he played basketball alongside Pat Riley. After attending New York University, he became the first Capital Region native to be drafted into the NBA.
Kramer was selected in the first round of the 1964 draft by the San Francisco Warriors. He also played with the New York Knicks, as well as with the New York Nets in the American Basketball Association.
Kramer would go on to graduate from Albany Law School in 1968 and become an attorney before being appointed as a surrogate court judge in Schenectady in 1993. He was later elected to the state supreme court in 2009.
"I'm very sad to learn of the passing of Judge Barry Kramer. Judge Kramer was a proud son of Schenectady, an outstanding high school, college and NBA basketball player, scholar and a dedicated public servant," stated New York State Senator Jim Tedisco. "Barry was a good friend and I enjoyed playing basketball with him as part of a team that traveled across New York State. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. May his memory be a blessing."
