Lane closures expected in downtown Edmond
EDMOND, Okla. (KFOR) - If you live in Edmond, you know traffic can get pretty clogged in the downtown area during rush hour. Now through the end of summer, expect some lane closures throughout the area.
Downtown Edmond is full of rich history. It dates back to 1887, when the Santa Fe railroad laid its tracks.
Now, dozens of cars drive up and down Broadway to shop and eat local. During rush hour, it can get busy.
Lena Dozier, the Downtown Transformation Manager, said Edmond is going through a bit of a revival. With that, officials are using $1.85 Million in federal funds to make things more ADA compliant.
Those changes include fixing the ramps that slope down from the sidewalk to the street.
"They're out of compliance right now," said Dozier. "They put people into the middle of the intersections."
They'll also be adding some fresh paint.
"The crosswalk markings will be more prominent and wider to keep cars pulled back further," said Dozier.
New programming is also coming to traffic signals for timing and audible notifications for the visually impaired.
The work is happening a couple of blocks at a time.
The first stretch will be between Main and Campbell. Drivers can expect lanes to be narrowed now until mid-February.
Edmond wants you to pay attention behind the wheel, but don't avoid the area.
"Never avoid Broadway," said Dozier. "The small businesses in Downtown Edmond still need that traffic."
This is the first of six improvements the city has planned. The entire project is expected to wrap up at the end of Summer.
