Powerful earthquake in China leaves at least 32 dead
Chinese media have reported a powerful earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale that shook parts of western China.
According to China’s Xinhua News Agency, the earthquake occurred on Tuesday, January 7, at around 9:05 a.m. local time in Shigatse, an autonomous region in Tibet.
A spokesperson for the Shigatse rescue organization stated that at least 32 people were killed and nearly 40 others were injured as a result of the earthquake.
Seismology centers reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located in western China at a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface.
Videos from Shigatse show extensive damage caused by the earthquake, with buildings and infrastructure heavily affected.
Reports also indicate that the earthquake was felt beyond Tibet, reaching areas in India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.
Rescue teams have been dispatched to the affected areas to provide assistance, evacuate residents, and address urgent needs. The Chinese government has urged local authorities to prioritize relief efforts and support for those impacted.
This earthquake highlights the need for regional cooperation in disaster preparedness and response. Strengthening early warning systems and infrastructure resilience is essential to mitigate the impact of future seismic events and save lives across affected regions.
