Coby White's dunk over Victor Wembanyama highlights Bulls' comeback victory
It’s hard enough to deal with someone 7-3 as it is.
But 7-3 and the agility Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama is blessed with?
Good luck.
‘‘They’re tops in the league in protecting the rim, shot-blocking,’’ Bulls coach Billy Donovan said of the Spurs and Wembanyama. ‘‘Obviously, he’s a huge part of that. He’s got a lot of range and can protect, cover the basket for them. Incredibly agile, long.
‘‘It’s interesting because in a lot of ways he’s very deceptive. There are times he’s down there, and you think you have an angle. His speed, his length, the way he gets off the floor make it really difficult. When you get in there, you’ve got to make really good decisions.’’
Center Nikola Vucevic was reminded of that right away in the Bulls’ come-from-behind, 114-110 victory Monday.
Wembanyama’s first block on Vucevic came just more than a minute into the game. Three minutes later, Vucevic challenged Wembanyama again — and lost again.
That was the theme of the night until guard Coby White decided to try. His solution? Go right at Wembanyama.
That’s exactly what White did, throwing down an emphatic dunk over him with 15.2 seconds left, highlighting a 32-15 fourth quarter that rallied the Bulls to victory.
‘‘He had eight blocks,’’ White said of the play. ‘‘I think three of them were on me. I kind of just told myself the next time I go up, I was just going to try and dunk it. Dunk it before he could get to the rim. And then I knew while I was driving that if I was to lay it in or roll it, he was going to block it. I wanted to make sure I got the basket.’’
He did, and no one appreciated it more than his teammates.
‘‘Coby barely dunks anyway, so when he dunked that, I kind of freaked out a little bit,’’ guard Zach LaVine said. ‘‘Big-time dunk. In the second half, we went out and challenged [Wembanyama]. You’ve gotta make him block it.’’
In addition to his eight blocks, Wembanyama finished with 23 points and 14 rebounds.
But credit the Bulls (17-19). On a night in which they trailed by 19 points in the first half, they stayed in the fight.
LaVine led the Bulls with 35 points, 14 of them in the fourth quarter. Vucevic added 24 points and 11 rebounds and White 23 points.
Another week
Donovan offered some more details on the injured right calf that has sidelined guard Ayo Dosunmu, and it again sounded as though he would be out for longer than first anticipated.
Because Dosunmu had some pain last week when the Bulls ramped up the running portion of his rehab schedule, he was pulled back. Donovan didn’t want to call it a setback, but it sounded like one.
‘‘In talking to [the medical staff], what it’s looking like right now is it’s going to be another week for him to get to that point,’’ Donovan said. ‘‘At least get him back to that point where he can cross that threshold of being able to run. Because he got cut short from being able to do that, they’ve backed up. Once he can get over that, then you start talking about cutting, running, more involved in practice.’’
Monday was the sixth game Dosunmu had missed with the injury, but he has been working on keeping up his cardio by biking and doing workouts in the pool.
