How congestion pricing affects Uber, Lyft and taxi rides
NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Now that congestion pricing is in effect, Uber, taxi and Lyft rides in Manhattan could get a little more expensive.
The new tolling system went into effect Sunday, charging drivers to enter Manhattan at or below 60th Street. The prices vary by car type, time of day and route.
Here’s what you need to know about how congestion pricing affects Uber, taxi and Lyft rides:
How much does congestion pricing cost for Uber, taxi and Lyft trips?
Taxis, green cabs and black cars will pay $0.75 per trip, regardless of whether it’s during peak or overnight hours. Ubers, Lyfts and other large for-hire companies will pay $1.50 per trip.
The toll will be charged on all trips into, out of and around Manhattan south of 61st Street. These cars will not face the regular $9 daily peak fee or $2.50 daily overnight fee to enter the zone.
Who pays the toll?
Riders will pay the toll. But, for January, Lyft will credit the $1.50 back to the rider’s account for use on a Lyft or Citi Bike ride. The credit will be eligible for a week after the initial ride.
Existing tolls for Uber, Lyft and taxi riders
For-hire cars already pay a congestion fee to travel around Manhattan south of 96th Street, according to Uber and Lyft. For taxis, this charge is $2.50 and for Uber and Lyfts, the charge is $2.75.
The $0.75 and $1.50 congestion pricing charges will compound on top of the existing toll, according to Uber.
