AAA reports high number of trapped vehicles in Kansas snow
TOPEKA (KSNT) - The American Automobile Association (AAA) is reporting a large number of vehicles trapped in the snow in Kansas following a weekend blizzard.
Shawn Steward with AAA told 27 News following a written information request that crews are seeing a high number of service calls on Monday, Jan. 6. Many people are calling AAA for help with stuck vehicles and dead batteries following a major winter storm.
"Yesterday’s weather and road conditions were extremely challenging for not only motorists who ventured out, but also for law enforcement, emergency response crews and towing service operators, including AAA’s," Steward said. "The warnings from KDOT and local municipalities to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary were definitely appropriate."
Steward said emergency workers have to face the same types of dangers that stranded drivers deal with during situations like this, including treacherous roads and severe weather. He reminds drivers to consider what danger they put emergency workers in if they decide to leave their homes in snow storms.
The Kansas Highway Patrol has also been busy rescuing stranded motorists following the winter storm. Its aircraft are in use Monday searching for people who need to be saved in rural parts of the state.
AAA encourages people to keep their vehicles stocked with winter emergency kits if they do become stranded. You can learn more about what these should contain by clicking here.
