Three signings Tottenham could look to make in January – Alasdair Gold
With the January transfer window now open, according to journalist Alasdair Gold, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing three crucial signings in three different positions, a move that could shape the remainder of their campaign.
Tottenham’s summer spree and the struggles that followed
Tottenham Hotspur entered the 2024/25 season with high expectations after a summer spending spree that saw them invest over £138m in new talent.
North London welcomed the likes of Dominic Solanke, who arrived for £65m, and young talents such as Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert, and Lucas Bergvall, with the aim of strengthening the squad under the leadership of Ange Postecoglou.
However, the ambitious moves have yet to yield the desired results. Spurs currently find themselves languishing in mid-table, a stark contrast to the optimism that greeted the start of the season.
Injuries to key players and inconsistency in performances have further compounded their struggles, leaving the team desperate for reinforcements as they look to salvage the season.
Despite the difficulties, the January transfer window offers an opportunity to recalibrate.
Tottenham are said to be eyeing three key signings
Alasdair Gold, speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, hinted at the club’s plans for the window, revealing that the recruitment team is exploring the market for solutions that could address some of the glaring issues in the squad.
According to the journalist, Tottenham are eyeing three potential signings this winter—a left-back, a centre-back, and a midfielder, with versatility being a key consideration.
The journalist said: “From what I understand, Spurs are looking at potentially a new left-back, a new centre-back and in an ideal world I wonder if they could find someone to cover both of those positions like Micky van de Ven does.
“Also they’re potentially looking at midfielders, whether that’s attacking or not, I’m not entirely certain that Bentancur or Bissouma are the ideal Postecoglou number six.”
Tottenham’s winter targets and options
So who have the Lilywhites been linked with this winter, for centre-back options Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite has been touted as a possible signing. However, his rising stock and Everton’s financial demands may make a deal challenging.
Another name linked with Spurs is Ko Itakura of Borussia Mönchengladbach. The 27-year-old has earned a reputation as one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable defenders, and with just 18 months left on his contract, he could be a cost-effective solution.
For the left-back position, Tottenham have been linked with players such as Tyrick Mitchell of Crystal Palace and Patrick Dorgu of Lecce, both of whom offer youthful energy and defensive solidity.
Midfield reinforcements are also on the agenda, with Lyon’s Maxence Caqueret emerging as a possible target, his relatively modest price tag could sway Spurs into making a move.
Tottenham’s January activity will be crucial in determining the remainder of their season. With clear priorities and a sense of urgency, the right signings could transform a faltering campaign into one of resilience and redemption.
