Burlingame’s new Goodthing Coffee serves Japanese cheesecakes and java
Japanese cakes and elegant coffee and tea drinks — like matcha einspanners and osmanthus oat lattes — are on offer at Goodthing Coffee, a cozy, stylish new Burlingame cafe.
Mountain View-based pastry chef Shuo Yang and husband Vincent Gu launched the cafe this fall as a venue for Yang to sell her cakes, set inside a coffee shop inspired by London cafes they’ve visited that highlight creative coffees made from light-roasted beans. Over the discouraging months they spent searching for their perfect location, he says, they kept telling each other, “This will be a good thing.”
Now Goodthing Coffee is drawing happy customers, drawn by Yang’s Japanese-style cheesecakes. Three months in, one thing is already clear: The cakes are a hit. Baked fresh daily, Yang’s Hokkaido cheesecake and matcha yuzu cheesecake often sell out by afternoon, Gu says.
On the coffee side of the menu, the cafe sources its beans from roasters in Sweden, Amsterdam and Paris and specializes in pour-over offerings.
