Pakistani advisor reaffirms continuation of strikes in Afghanistan
Rana Sanaullah, senior advisor to Pakistan’s Prime Minister, warned that Pakistan would launch another attack on Afghanistan if faced with threats or risks of attacks originating from Afghanistan’s territory. In an interview, he stated that under international law, Pakistan has the right to act across borders to protect its sovereignty.
On Sunday, in an interview with Samaa TV, Sanaullah said, “It is an international law that if there is a threat to your territory or preparations for an attack are underway in a specific location, you have the right to take action against such terrorists or enemies to safeguard your security.”
He emphasized that Pakistan would act at an appropriate time whenever a threat arises.
Earlier, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, referred to a recent airstrike in Paktika and warned of a strong response to any cross-border attacks.
On Friday, January 3, during the “National Projects Committee” meeting, Sharif accused Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) of multiple attacks against security forces and civilians, holding them responsible for escalating violence.
The Taliban claimed that the Pakistani military’s airstrike on December 30 in Paktika’s Barmal district killed at least 50 people, including women and children. This was Pakistan’s second airstrike in Afghanistan in 2024.
Pakistani officials stated that the strike targeted military and media centers of the TTP and reportedly killed several of its commanders. Meanwhile, the United Nations political mission in Afghanistan confirmed the deaths of women and children in the airstrike.
The escalating hostilities underscore the urgent need for diplomatic engagement between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Both nations must work towards de-escalation and address underlying issues to prevent further violence that endangers civilians and regional stability.
The international community must mediate and encourage dialogue to prevent the conflict from spiraling further. Humanitarian efforts should also focus on protecting civilians affected by the violence, ensuring accountability, and fostering a peaceful resolution to these tensions.
