Cow escapes, swims Columbia, runs on I-84, caught near Hood River
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A loose cow that had been missing for several days was successfully wrangled on I-84 near Hood River, according to Oregon State Police.
On New Year's Day, an OSP trooper responded to a report of a cow being seen on I-84 near Hood River. The cow had been reported missing after escaping from a property in Washington a few days before.
The cow had also managed to jump into the Columbia River with its sighting reported by nearby fisherman as it came up toward the freeway, officials said.
Despite several people trying to corral the cow to keep it off the freeway, it jumped the median and headed towards railroad tracks.
The cow walked several miles on the tracks and through a tunnel when officials said a woman stepped in front of it.
"The cow stopped, stared at the young woman, and then collapsed from exhaustion," OSP said.
Authorities said the cow was then loaded into a horse trailer and taken to a nearby property until it could be reunited with its owners.
