Winter weather alert issued for New York City: Things to know
NEW YORK (PIX11) -- A winter weather alert has been issued as New York City is expected to see snowfall on Monday.
Light snow will begin in the morning and continue into the evening, creating slippery conditions that could affect commutes.
Temperatures will stay below freezing. Wind chills throughout the day may make temperatures feel below 20 degrees.
“We urge New Yorkers to prepare for a challenging evening commute on Monday, as this winter weather system brings some snow accumulation early in the New Year. The snow will cause slippery road conditions, that will impact drivers and pedestrians,” said NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol. “We encourage all New Yorkers to use mass transit, allow for extra travel time, monitor the forecast, and exercise caution.”
The New York City Department of Sanitation is pretreating roadways and bike lanes with liquid brine.
A Code Blue has also been issued. Shelters and drop-in centers will be available city-wide for the homeless and those seeking shelter. No one will be denied shelter during a Code Blue.
The NYCDHS will deploy outreach teams to assist homeless individuals. If you encounter a homeless person in the cold, please call 311, and an outreach team will be sent to that location.
More information on homeless assistance can be found online or on the 311 app.
Alternate side parking has been suspended Monday in observance of Three King Day.
New York City public school buildings will remain open.
